The Indonesian Armed Forces should be allowed to keep its small nonprofit cooperatives and foundations despite being required by law to sell off all its business interests, Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono said on Tuesday.
The House of Representatives passed a law in 2004 requiring the government to take over all military-owned businesses by 2009, but the Defense Ministry wants to allow the military to keep cooperatives that provide cheap basic commodities and small saving schemes for low-ranking soldiers, and foundations which offer inexpensive education for their children.

My Foundation director tells me that she’s having a lot of meetings with elephants at the moment. Not real ones I hasten to add. But she describes meetings in which capital plans are talked up with great confidence and no mention is made of the difficult fundraising climate in which these buildings are to be constructed: the ‘elephant in the room’ is the global economic downturn which is affecting us all and which will clearly affect many major capital projects in the coming months. She could as easily tell me that she is taking meetings with ostriches who are placing their heads resolutely in the sand. Fundraising is not an easy task right now, but honesty and objectivity are clearly the best approaches when talking to funders."

These were some of the questions tackled at a workshop last week organized by the Venture for Fund Raising for nongovernmental organizations. With the Philippines now considered a middle-income country, many of these donors are reducing their grants here, or are pulling out completely, so NGOs have to think about how they can diversify their funding base."

Charity Finance | European decisions could spell windfalls for charities: "Two judgments have been made in the European Court of Justice (ECJ) which could see charities gain by several millions of pounds.
The first increases the likelihood that cross-border EU charitable donations may become tax-deductible, and the second allows sports clubs and associations to claim back at least three years’ VAT charges on subscriptions.

allAfrica.com: Africa: Can New Foundations Break the Dependency Cycle? (Page 1 of 2): "his article attempts to answer three related questions. The first is whether new African philanthropic foundations such as TrustAfrica and the African Women's Development Fund (AWDF) have the clout needed to raise money from the North and use it on their own terms to set their own development agenda. Put differently, can these institutions engage on equal terms with their northern partners? The second relates to dependency, which has characterised relations between the non-profit sector and its donors, particularly from the North. Can the new institutions break the dependency cycle? The third question is whether these institutions and the new generation of African philanthropists will break with or recreate power imbalances that have existed over the years between northern donors and southern recipients."

THISDAY ONLINE / Nigeria news / African views on global news: "More often than not, a company constructs a borehole in a community and goes to commission it with fanfare and it ends there. Another decides to award some educational scholarships to a couple of indigent students in a community where it operates and that is where its corporate social responsibility (CSR) ends. Well intentioned as these gestures appear to be, experts on the concept of social corporate responsibility contend that the philosophy goes further than that."

Britain's richest people increasingly involved in charitable giving | Society | The Guardian: "According to this year's Sunday Times rich list, the 1,000 wealthiest people in the UK are collectively worth over £412.8bn, a rise of nearly 15% since 2007. And as personal wealth has grown, so has their desire to give it away. In Britain, where the average person gives £150 a year to charity, the top 30 philanthropists last year committed to donate £2.38bn. While that figure may be dwarfed by the generosity of philanthropists in the US - where last year the top 30 promised £5.47bn - the amount is more than five times that donated by Britain's rich elite in 2006."

The Economic Times: "LONDON: It's not usual for a wealth manager to tell his clients how to give away money their money, but that, says Peter Flavel, global head of Standard Chartered private banking 'is what the clients want.'
Standard Chartered has just set up its focused Global Indian private banking programme for both onshore and offshore HNIs, the second such global programme after one for Australians.
To begin with, the programme launches in UK, where Mr Flavel estimates there are 35,000 rich global Indians with more than USD 1 million to invest, that is the base level.
Says Mr Flavel, 'More wealthy Indians want to do good things with their money, but don't know where to give, or how. We're in a position of being able to provide the service.' Charity begins at work - Service Industries - Management Today: "Helping employees donate to charity via your payroll costs nothing - and charities end up better off...
Here at MT we’re big fans of Workplace Giving, a Government scheme to get more people donating to charity via their employer. The benefits are obvious: if you make a charitable donation out of your net salary, you have to pay tax on it first. But if the donation comes straight off your gross salary, your chosen charity gets all the tax payable – without the Revenue taking its pound of flesh. So for a higher rate taxpayer, your £60 donation to Oxfam is magically transformed into £100, without you or your employer needing to spend an extra penny. Apparently if every donor did this, it would yield an extra £900m a year for charity (although presumably it would all come out of the Treasury’s coffers, which wouldn’t please the Prime Minister at the moment)."

Philanthropy inChina: Thanks for the Offer, But … | Newsweek Periscope | Newsweek.com: "Officials in China's devastated Sichuan province are getting a crash course in a novel concept: accepting philanthropy. Since the May 12 earthquake that killed nearly 70,000 people and destroyed homes across the region, millions may have been lost because officials were leery of taking money from nongovernmental organizations and private donors. In just one county, Mianzhu, a team from McKinsey Greater China recovered $2.2 million in a single week, says Qiu Tian, project manager for the pro bono effort. Like most conflicts, the Vietnam War was not fought against its people but against a government, though the people are the ones who sacrifice and suffer.
