Carlos Slim Joins Bill Gates, Other Billionaires, With $100 Million To Fight Polio - Forbes: At the Global Vaccine Summit in Abu Dhabi late last week, the world’s two richest men made a bit of philanthropic history. Carlos Slim announced his foundation will donate $100 million to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), a Bill Gates-backed effort to eliminate polio. It marks what appears to be the largest collaboration among the two men. It’s also the second time this year the two have announced joint philanthropic efforts.

Most of this money was made during the past 30 years, after China started a reform and opening initiative. And the rich got richer as China evolved from a society based on shared wealth to one that lets money concentrate in the hands of a few.

China’s Gini coefficient, a measure of wealth disparity, has been climbing as the gap between rich and poor widens. And as this widening has continues, resentment toward the wealthy has been rising in China."

'Some people have wondered if we're coming to China to pressure people to give. Not at all,' the two richest Americans told Xinhua in a response letter on the banquet for Chinese billionaires sponsored by them, which is scheduled for Sept. 29."

While higher than other emerging markets like Brazil (0.3%) and China (0.1%), the amount of collective donation still pales in comparison to Western nations like Canada (1.3%) and the U.S. (2.2%).

Just 10% of charitable giving in India comes from individuals or companies, compared to 75% in the U.S., the Bain & Co. study reported. India’s biggest donor: the government."
