Foreign funding dries up for Latin American NGOs - CSMonitor.com

Foreign funding dries up for Latin American NGOs - CSMonitor.com: Aid from foreign governments fund about 50 percent of Latin America's civil society, according to estimates from the Inter-American Development Bank. The rest is made up by money from international NGOs and private donors. But international government contributions are drying up. Between 2005 and 2008, contributions to NGOs in Latin America grew an average of 37 percent. From 2008 to 2011, the donations grew just 3 percent, according to figures from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). This was well below the average regional inflation of 6.1 percent for 2012.

Inequality, philanthropy and social entrepreneurship | Inquirer Opinion

Inequality, philanthropy and social entrepreneurship | Inquirer Opinion: ur country is among the most unequal in wealth and income distribution in Asia, such that it is often associated with its more distant cousins in Latin America. World Bank data on Gini index—which goes from 0 (perfect equality) to 100 (perfect inequality)—indicate that the Philippines’ index is 43, compared with Thailand’s 40 (as of 2009), Indonesia’s 34 (2005), and Vietnam’s 36 (2008).

Comes now the front-page news (Inquirer, 3/4/13) reporting Cielito Habito’s observation that the rise in aggregate wealth of the Philippines’ 40 richest families in 2010-2011 was equivalent to 76.5 percent of the increase in the economy’s GDP during the same period. The corresponding figures were 33.7 percent in Thailand, 5.6 percent in Malaysia, and 2.8 percent in Japan. This does not mean that more than three-quarters of the Philippines’ GDP goes to the 40 families as wealth is a stock while annual GDP is a flow. The ratios merely poignantly highlight how serious social inequality is in our country.

Under-30s take centre stage in Indian philanthropy - Corporate News - livemint.com

Under-30s take centre stage in Indian philanthropy - Corporate News - livemint.com: Significantly, younger high net-worth individuals, or HNIs (under the age of 30), are emerging key players in philanthropic decision-making, according to the report. In the US—ranked highest by individual per-capita giving in the world—philanthropy has long been the realm of older people. Famous American philanthropists such as John D. Rockefeller, Buffett and Gates spent their youth accumulating wealth, only focusing on “giving back” later in life. Indians appear to be bucking this trend, according to the report. To be sure, even in the US, efforts by Gates and Buffett have ensured that young entrepreneurs such as Mark Zuckerberg have signed away a significant portion of their wealth to charity.

Social Enterprises to Unlock the Potential in Latin America | Social Enterprise: This partnership is an example of the emerging trend of social enterprises in Latin America to find effective solutions to local problems using models of self-sufficiency. Philanthropic efforts have not been able to solve the widespread problems of the region. Maria Emilia Correa, an expert in sustainable entrepreneurship in Chile, says, "Philanthropy makes a lot of sense for some things, but when you can make a business out of solving a social or environmental problem, you have sustainability in the real sense, because it's going to work even if you have no donations."
