Latin American Herald Tribune - China Says Controversial NGO Law Suits "National Conditions": " China Friday appealed to its "judicial sovereignty" to defend the controversial NGO law it recently approved, which Beijing considers in line with "national conditions."
China's Parliament Thursday approved the law, criticized by several foreign non-governmental organizations in the country and by the U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, who believes that the legislation will encroach on the already shrinking space of the civil society in the country, by creating a "potentially hostile environment" for these organizations."

Asian Philanthropy: Strategic Social Stewardship | The Diplomat
Asian Philanthropy: Strategic Social Stewardship | The Diplomat: "According to the 2014 World Wealth Report, released by Capgemini and RMC Wealth Management, the aggregate investable wealth of HNWIs worldwide has reached $52.62 trillion, a 13.8 percent increase over the past year. Asia-Pacific boasts an estimated $14.2 trillion, with Japan taking the lead. Hong Kong ranks fourth, with about $626 billion in HNWI assets. Asia is home to the fastest growing HNWI population, with 65 percent of total Asia-Pacific HNWI wealth residing in Japan and China.
For many Asian HNWI families, wealth brings a sense of social responsibility. The characteristics of Asian philanthropy reflect cultural values. The family unit plays an important role in driving philanthropy in Asia, seeking out and reaping many benefits from philanthropy: “1) it teaches principles like compassion, courage and tolerance, 2) it fosters capacities for leadership, innovation and responsibility, and 3) it supports family cohesion by providing a common activity and goal for the family to pursue as a unit,” a 2011 UBS INSEAD philanthropy in Asia report explains."

Philanthropic Leapfrog: Giving in China - NPQ - Nonprofit Quarterly
Philanthropic Leapfrog: Giving in China - NPQ - Nonprofit Quarterly: Earlier this summer, I spoke to nonprofit leaders at a conference in China about American-style philanthropy. Reflecting on both formal and informal conversations with the inspiring and determined people driving the nonprofit sector there, I wanted to share surprising differences and future impact I observed.

Why charities must be open to mergers and collaboration | Voluntary Sector Network | Guardian Professional
Why charities must be open to mergers and collaboration | Voluntary Sector Network | Guardian Professional: There are 163,000 charities, according to the Charity Commission, and thousands more voluntary organisations are recognised as charitable but are unregistered. Should there be so many? Companies merge to make more profit, public sector bodies are reorganised to provide better services – maybe charities should do the same. Social entreprenerus lend helping hand|Society|chinadaily.com.cn: nlike traditional nonprofit organizations, social enterprises aim to be money-making and as self-sustaining as possible. While they do make money, they usually make less money than regular businesses, and they re-invest the profits in a related charity, targeting social problems. In China, this brand of social entrepreneurship is a growing trend.
In a 2011 study of family philanthropy in Asia by Swiss bank UBS and the Insead business school, 40 percent of respondents in China ranked the rise of social entrepreneurship as the most highly anticipated trend.

Nonprofits hurt by red tape and support gap |2013 NPC and CPPCC |chinadaily.com.cn: Capitalizing upon the momentum generated by the so-called third sector requires a streamlining of bureaucracy over nonprofits, particularly small grassroots organizations, and extensive partnerships with governments.
I have worked at a leadership level with two nonprofits devoted to the development of China's rural education. I find that only 440,000 of the roughly 3 million nonprofits in China had officially registered before 2011, as the China Charity and Donation Information Center reports. In other words, about 90 percent operate in gray areas, which often leaves them in functional limbo.
