Philanthropy and the arts – Harold Mitchell's review will create a bigger funding pool: Harold Mitchell’s review of private sector arts support is a bit like Ian Thorpe in his swimming heyday.

He’s a big presence, and has dived in with a determined goal and a strategy to win “gold” for the arts, streamlining giving from the big end of town. But Mitchell is also chasing people’s “silver and bronze”. putting forward the case that the arts touches everyday Australians (think Gen Y music festivals and going to films like Red Dog).

How much fundraising is too much? - Civil Society - Fundraising - Blogs - providing news and in-depth coverage of charities, voluntary organisations and not-for-profits: Fundraisers must have an honest discussion about just how much fundraising there should be or face a situation, says Michael Naidu.

After four and a half years as chair of the Public Fundraising Regulatory Association, in January I handed over the reins of the organisation to Paul Stallard. He joins the organisation at an incredibly challenging but interesting time. The sector is limbering up for the Charities Act review and there are some big questions to be answered.

Though the actual inherited amount is acknowledged to be variable and dependent on market fluctuations, it is big enough for many nonprofits to see planned giving, bequests, and other end-of-life gifts seem as a beacon of steady funding in a turbulent sea of grants and a shrinking donor base.

The unexpected challenges and benefits of building a business plan - Civil Society - Governance - Blogs - providing news and in-depth coverage of charities, voluntary organisations and not-for-profits: In last month’s blog I wrote about my new focus on developing our charity’s organisational capacity and the varied work this is entailing. Since then, I’ve been working on the one thing that ties all of this wide-ranging work together: creating our business plan.

Although I was familiar with the term “business plan” before we started the process, this is the first time I’ve ever been involved in creating one.

The business plan encapsulates pretty much everything about our charity. From articulating what we do and how we manage ourselves, to describing how we plan to build upon identified opportunities and tackle weaknesses - the business plan covers it all.

Philanthropy In Schooling Urged by Gonski Report | Pro Bono Australia

Philanthropy In Schooling Urged by Gonski Report | Pro Bono Australia: The Australian Government has commissioned a consultancy to address these concerns. Due to report in May 2012, the consultancy will develop guiding principles for school–business relationships that are voluntary and supportive, encourage good practice and emphasise mutual benefit.

A number of submissions to the Gonski review indicated that tax incentives are an important consideration for private individuals, charitable funds or foundations and businesses when making donations, particularly for major giving.

It says that despite recent initiatives to increase philanthropy in schooling, it is clear that more can be done to encourage activity in this area. Approaches to encourage philanthropy in schools should increase their capacity to form philanthropic relationships, reduce barriers to private investment, and provide national leadership and direction in focusing philanthropic activity to all disadvantaged school communities.

Due to the rise in income in many individuals in these regions a group of philanthropists are emerging, mostly business leaders, who are developing new models of philanthropy and innovating in exciting ways. Please note: I don’t want to discount that philanthropy has always been a part of these economies, as the majority of people do give back on a daily basis, in particular to their home communities (I highlight this in a recent blog about my trip to Nigeria). But, I do believe something different is happening.

Designed to protect the polar bears in the Arctic (hence the white hue), the multifaceted campaign has Coca-Cola matching individual donations up to $1 million until March 2012. Considering the iconic role of the polar bear in Coca-Cola marketing over the past 100 years, the partnership seems a logical step for Coke. "It was long overdue in my opinion," echoes Pete Ewins, WWF-Canada's resident polar bear expert.

Stretched to charitable extremes

Stretched to charitable extremes: t is not just celebrities or their surviving parents who want good to come out of tragedy. Ordinary people may also desire a tangible memorial to a loved one that goes beyond, say, a scholarship in their name. One's own charity can serve many purposes: to do good work, to immortalise the child or partner and, quite often, to subsume the founders' grief in work, publicity and fund-raising.

Add to these inevitably small organisations the bigger foundations celebrated sportsmen and their ilk establish, and what we have in Australia, no less than in Britain, is a crowded and fragmented charity field.

Are South African NGOs Employers of Choice or Necessity? | NGO Pulse: Working in civil society organisations is viewed as conscientised work and is based on the premise that those involved in civil society professions are motivated by more than just a salary, performance bonus and cellphone allowance. For many people working in the development sector the opportunity to contribute to social change is far more rewarding than being able to buy the latest Audi Q1, but are our NGOs willing and able to reflect on their people management practices to ensure that they are able to hire and retain the talent both from the corporate and development sectors?

I want to donate directly to a grassroots group - The Globe and Mail: It’s attractive to donate directly to truly grassroots projects, without the middleman of government or large international organizations. These local groups are more closely in touch with their community’s needs, and they don’t spend your money on advertisements or fundraising. However, besides not being able to grant charitable tax receipts, they’re also less likely to have audited statements, impact assessments or other formal means of oversight to ensure from a distance that your donation is being well used.

New forms of disaster relief a better alternative to straightforward giving - The Mainichi Daily News: But here, in this desolate town, some locals are undertaking new efforts. In November, Masaki Takahashi, 36, the head of the planning department at long-established fish-processing company Takamasa & Co., proposed a "local buying for local consumption" scheme for relief supplies. With the cooperation of the local association of commerce and industry, he created a system by which those wanting to offer assistance can do so by purchasing goods from companies in the disaster-hit areas. Whoever wants to send aid can contact the local commerce and industry association, which supplies the names and contact information of local companies carrying the goods the callers are hoping to donate.

Volunteering England and leaders of 27 major charities and voluntary sector umbrella bodies have called on the government not to charge volunteers for the planned portable Criminal Records Bureau checks.

The Protection of Freedoms Bill, which is before Parliament, proposes two types of criminal records check from 2013: a one-off check, which would remain free for volunteers as under the existing system, and a portable one based on a continuously updated criminal records database, which would allow an individual to work or volunteer for a number of organisations.

Times Higher Education - Large donations to universities drop 50%: The amount given to universities in 1 million-plus donations almost halved in 2009-10, an annual report from a bank reveals.

The drop takes the total from very large donations down to the levels of 2006-07 and 2007-08 and is thought to be caused by the drying-up of matched funding from the government.

In 2009-10, 299.4 million was given to universities in donations of more than 1 million, according to The Million Pound Donors Report 2011 by private banking house Coutts. This is a 48 per cent fall on the 2008-09 figure of 575.4 million.

Charities need regulation to maintain public's trust - The Irish Times - Wed, Dec 21, 2011

Charities need regulation to maintain public's trust - The Irish Times - Wed, Dec 21, 2011: OPINION: AT CHRISTMAS, Irish charities raise more in donations from the public than at any other time of the year. As the needs to be addressed become more acute, and charitable fundraising more sophisticated – and competitive – the public increasingly, and properly, expects transparency around financial matters and clarity about impact. Government and the non-profit sector should work harder to address this.

Non-profit organisations are perhaps the last sector in Irish society to enjoy a high degree of unconditional trust from the public. This has taken generations to build, and for the sector there is no more precious asset.
Charities should be more confident in their deals with corporates | Third Sector blog: Looking into the story a little deeper, the details became slightly blurred: the European Recycling Company, the private firm that runs the collection banks, insisted it was not accurate to use a cash-per-bank figure because the firm agreed a yearly donation with the charity that was not directly linked to its profits or its income from donated stock.

The charity also said it expected to receive 35,000 rather than the reported 30,000 from the company this year. Even so, divided by the 7,000 collection points, it would equate to just a fiver per bank.

Wedgwood Museum's collection can be sold to pay creditors, judge rules | Third Sector: A High Court judge has ruled that the Wedgwood Museum’s collection can be sold to pay off creditors, after a 134m pensions deficit forced the Wedgwood Museum Trust to go into administration.

The trust, based in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, went into administration last year following the transfer of the pension debt from the collapse of the Waterford Wedgwood pottery firm, which became insolvent in 2009.
