You’d be hard-pressed to find a nonprofit organization that doesn’t spend an incredible amount of time focused on resource development. As a result, some organizations establish their own foundation - known as a 'parallel foundation'. The parallel foundation dedicates itself to fund development and management, which frees the “parent organization” to focus on the daily operations associated with its mission. Parallel foundations are most often associated with large organizations like universities and hospitals, but can also be found connected to other types of organizations."

The conference was organized by the Policy Association for an Open Society (PASOS) and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. Soros said that companies that invest in public interests create an open and balanced society. The Spectator.co.uk: "Or at least cough up for something. Rich List compilers Philip Beresford and Alistair McCall say there is ‘an unprecedented boom in giving’, with ‘more than £1.2 billion pledged or donated in the past year by the leading 30 philanthropists’, starting with a half-billion pledge by London-based Indian businessman Anil Agarwal to build a university in his native country. Meanwhile over in Mayfair’s Hedge Fund Alley, hands-on philanthropy is said to be the must-have lifestyle accessory for the elite of this hugely profitable sector. But across Britain as a whole, charitable giving has not shown anything like as spectacular a rise as upper-strata wealth generation."

Give and Take, A Chronicle Blog talks about Latin American Fundraising and a Blog by Daniel Yoffe.

Give and Take: Latin American Fundraisers: "Latin American Fundraisers

Why has Latin American fund raising yet to develop?

According to the Johns Hopkins University, Latin American charities only earn 10 percent of their income from private donations, with the remainder generated by fees for services and government grants.

Daniel Yoffe, a charity consultant in Mexico, and Brad Henderson, who oversees Latin America for the Association of Fundraising Professionals, note the challenges on Mr. Yoffe’s blog, Fund Raising En America Latina."

According to the Johns Hopkins Comparative Nonprofit Sector Project, CSOs in Latin America rely on income from fees and services more than in any other region of the world, with 75 per cent of their funding coming from services, 10 per cent from philanthropy and a mere 15 per cent from government. Under these circumstances, the role of fundraisers is becoming increasingly important. But are they equipped to deliver what is expected of them? Despite the high expectations of staff hired to raise money, there is a limited understanding of fundraising and the barriers that fundraising professionals face in Latin America."
