Fund-raising is on the rise, as Helen Kempton reports. CHARITY is now big business and every year Australians donate $11 billion to institutions ranging from lost dogs' homes to Amnesty International.

But it is out on the highways and byways where a fund-raising phenomenon is happening.

Each year, more and more individuals take it upon themselves to run, cycle or even hop in the name of raising money for cancer research, to prevent suicide and a myriad other causes."
