"said that the University sector in Ireland continued to be severely under funded; “Our colleges and Universities were saved from penury in the 1990s by philanthropists such as Atlantic Philanthropies and some very generous private individuals. But the need for finance is as acute today as it was then and I would appeal to the new generation of wealthy entrepreneurs in Ireland in particular to show their support for the University sector which is critical to the creation of a true knowledge economy.”"

"Philanthropy is clearly one of the main responsibilities of high earners, because they should give back to the society that has helped them realise their opportunities. In the US, top earners in effect pay a voluntary tax on their earnings, and large numbers accept the obligation. Some prominent figures have given away virtually their whole fortune, especially towards the end of their lives. There is not the same culture of philanthropy in this country, and despite the introduction of tax incentives, there is not yet the same level of tax breaks."

Check out Philanthropy UK's Newsletter.
Welcome to the March 2007 issue of the Philanthropy UK Newsletter! Our new look represents Philanthropy UK's new brand identity, launched this month.
Why rebrand? There has been much activity in British philanthropy since Philanthropy UK was founded in 2001: budding interest by individuals has been matched by a growing philanthropy infrastructure to support their giving (see our Philanthropy Directory for a full list). There also is more media coverage of philanthropy, and in 2005 Government renewed its commitment to supporting charitable giving, laying out its vision and priorities in A Generous Society.
In light of these significant developments, we decided to update our brand to better reflect our mission and what we do, and to further improve our communications with the giving community.

People's Daily Online -- New tax law helps charity

More substantial steps should be made to implement the stipulation in a new act for encouraging corporate charity, says a signed article in Beijing News. An excerpt follows:
According to the Corporate Income Tax Law newly adopted by the National People's Congress, businesses can have their donations exempt from income tax when the amount is within 12 percent of annual revenue.
Compared with the previous stipulation, the new rule offers much greater incentive to encourage corporate donations by raising the tax-deductible percentage from 3 to 12 percent. This change will become a significant stimulus for businesses to contribute to charity once the law takes effect on January 1, 2008."
