Philanthropists urged to donate time to make Big Society real | Philanthropy UK

Philanthropists urged to donate time to make Big Society real | Philanthropy UK: "Philanthropists are being urged to volunteer their time to make the Big Society work by contributing to the Your Square Mile initiative.

It targets 16 of the most deprived areas in a pilot scheme encouraging people to work together with voluntary organisations and local authorities, in order to build social capital.

'Your Square Mile' has been devised by Paul Twivy, the founder of the Big Society Network. He told delegates at the Green Alliance conference on the Big Society that he envisages the creation of 8,000 to 10,000 “neighbourhood states” across the UK, each with 6,000 to 8,000 active participants. “In rural areas this might be a large village or a collection of hamlets; in urban areas it will be a couple of wards,” he said."
