Gift Aid costs taxman after 170m in donations lost through abuse | Mail Online: Around 170 million worth of tax has been lost over the last year because Gift Aid relief on charitable donations is being abused.
The National Audit Office (NAO) warned that while Gift Aid was an 'important source' of funding worth 1 billion - or 2 per cent of charities' income last year - it had not proved itself to be value for money
The report warned the system was at risk from criminals who may falsify donations to generate a Gift Aid relief and set up a bogus charity as a front to commit fraud.
