TheStar.com | comment | Mixing business and philanthropy: "Americans call it philanthrocapitalism. We call it social enterprise.

South of the border, it is the new face of giving, championed by former president Bill Clinton, Microsoft chair Bill Gates, financier Warren Buffett and eBay founder Jeff Skoll. Here in Canada, it is a more modest movement led by a small but growing body of socially conscious entrepreneurs."

Jet Li celebrates his charity efforts -- china.org.cn: "International Kung Fu star Jet Li celebrated the first anniversary of philanthropic efforts by his charity foundation today in Beijing. A China.org.cn reporter witnessed as additional powerful figures took part in the event.

Jet Li established The One Foundation in partnership with the China Red Cross Society on April 17, 2007.

Yesterday Jet Li finished promoting his latest motion picture The Forbidden Kingdom, his joint effort with another Kung Fu superstar Jackie Chan. Chan is also committed to Jet Li's charity.

The foundation advocates: '1 person + 1 dollar/yuan + 1 month = 1 big family'. If each person donates at least one dollar/yuan each month, individual donations could be transformed into a much greater fund. By merging charitable strength, the foundation ensures that the most vulnerable members of the global family would receive the help they need."

Social institutions have a role in public services

Social institutions have a role in public services: "n the United States, non-profit organizations received about 35 percent of their 2005 income from the administrative, either through contracts or applications to special funds. The non-profit organizations in China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region receive 80 to 100 percent of their income from the administrative.

In Hong Kong, the government and the social institutions used to form a 'partnership' in offering public services. Under this partnership, the social institutions dispensed advice as consultants or carried out plans as the agents.

But in recent years, the Hong Kong government began to award contracts to these institutions, in which the financial input of the government and the services offered by the organizations are explicitly stated."
