Daily Nation:- News|Kerosene lamp that lit the road to charity: "Evans says his eyesight was affected when he was in primary school because of the smoke emitted from the kerosene lamp commonly known as ‘koroboi’ in Kiluhya. This is part of what drives him to give back to the community by supplying the lamps free of charge.

“This is done through community groups of 30 members within each village. It is painful that poor people in villages spend the little money they get on kerosene. With the solar lamps, they will be able to save the money and spend it on food and clothing,” says Evans."

Sector Surveys: How are we doing in 2010?: "How are charities doing this year, compared to 2009? What is expected for the future?

The findings in the Sector Monitor show a sense of stagnation overall. And although the numbers aren't completely dismal, the approach going forward seems to be one of increasing caution.

Among the Monitor highlights are indications that, compared to previous survey findings, more charities are experiencing challenges due to economic conditions, more charities are experiencing high stress and the human resources picture is challenging.

It shows that more than half of charities have had an increased demand for their products and services and/or difficulty fulfilling their mission in 2010.

Organization leaders are being careful as they look ahead."

Gatekeepers | The American Prospect

Gatekeepers | The American Prospect: "The Gates method brings to philanthropy what the Powell Doctrine brought to war: overwhelming force. But the eye-popping figures on the foundation's balance sheets raise not just the question of how best to give away billions but whether such sums should be given away at this pace. Buffett's donation, for instance, requires that the foundation hand out at least $1.5 billion annually -- which is 'harder than you think,' former foundation CEO and current senior adviser Patty Stonesifer admitted to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer in 2008. Cases like Avahan show how the execution can fall far short of hopes. In regions where aid dependence has been a curse to rival poverty and disease, the very idea of charity is suspect. And a growing class of so-called social entrepreneurs is pushing a private-sector development model that they say is more sustainable."
