‘Profit-making’ Mumbai University told to pay Rs 39cr income tax - The Times of India: During the assessment proceedings, the university submitted that its income was exempt from tax because it was "substantially" financed by the government and this was the reason for its not filing income tax returns. The university cited in its defence the Income Tax Act that excuses "any university or other educational institution existing solely for educational purposes and not for the purpose of profit, which is wholly and substantially financed by the government."

EU Data Protection Proposals | UK Fundraising
EU Data Protection Proposals | UK Fundraising: n August 2014, the Institute of Fundraising (IoF) published a member briefing on EU Data Protection Proposals. The IoF wants to raise awareness of the proposed European Regulation on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data proposals and what they might mean for fundraising. The proposals from the European Commission may be amended as the legislative process is followed, but fundraisers should rad the proposals so that they are aware of the changes that could be made. The IoF will update members in due course as it knows more on the progress of the proposals and has more certainty on what will be introduced. The IoF will be working to raise concerns with relevant decision makers and MEPs to highlight the particular proposals and amendments the IoF wants to make. If you would like to be involved or support the IoF’s work on this then please email danielf@institute-of-fundraising.org.uk.

Alberta Arts Flood Rebuild has disbursed the remaining $198,500 it received in donations and government funding to aid artists and arts organizations impacted by last year’s devastating flood. Of that, $25,000 was given by The Calgary Foundation to create the Arts Disaster Preparedness Plan, and approximately $25,500 will be used to create a special fund at Elephant Artist Relief Society to help artists in crisis.

Let’s go global…there’s gold in them hills - 101fundraising: Whilst there is undoubtedly enormous opportunity to organisations to expand their fundraising internationally and certainly most of our clients have done so with great success over the last decade or so, in most cases non-profits would be far better if they focused their fundraising efforts in their home market. Those of you that know me as an obsessive on the theme and practice of globalising fundraising and as someone that has spent the last 30 years working in fundraising in over 50 countries, this may appear to heretical.

We also found that high profile brands tend to have high income - no charity in our sample had raised more than 200 million and not been a household name (defined as having a prompted awareness of 80% ).
