Charity vs. philanthropy in Saudi Arabia | ArabNews

Charity vs. philanthropy in Saudi Arabia | ArabNews: n Saudi Arabia, there are approximately 700 charity centers and foundation registered with the Ministry of Social Affairs. The majority of donations to those charities go to organizations with religious affiliations, which are concerned with building mosques, supporting Qur’an teaching schools, sponsoring orphans and general charity work. The rest goes to health organizations and social services.
However, charity work is still below the level of expectations in terms of both quantity and quality. If we compare the numbers of registered charities with that of a country like the United States, which has over 1.8 million charity organizations — the city of New York alone has more than 98,000 active foundations — we would sense the urgent need for increasing the number of working charities in the Kingdom.

4bn could be generated in charitable legacies if solicitors just asked: A potential 4bn of funding could be unlocked for the charity sector if solicitors were to remind those writing a will to consider giving to charity, according to a study conducted by the Cabinet Office’s behavioural insights team.

The study is one of five trials informing a report, released today by the team, to uncover ways the sector could potentially boost its income. It found that encouraging people to consider leaving a gift to charity in their will could double the number of legacy donations. It further found that creating a personal connection, by asking if there were any charities the individual is passionate about, could lead to triple the number of legacy gifts.

allAfrica.com: Nigeria: A Better Way of Giving (Page 1 of 2): As Africans, we tend to give money to people to satisfy an immediate need, a child's school fees, a hospital bill, a gift of cash to cover expenses. But often this is not sustainable in the long run. Yes, a child goes to school for a while, the medical expenses are covered this time and the cash keeps the family afloat for another month or two. But soon enough, the next term's fees become payable, the hospital bills and living expenses continue to mount and in time, they'll inevitably be back to ask for more. It's a vicious circle that leads nowhere.
