Treasury review group recommends consolidation of NHS charities' accounts - Third Sector

Treasury review group recommends consolidation of NHS charities' accounts - Third Sector: "t says that NHS charities that have an NHS trust as their corporate trustee should have their assets recorded on the trust's balance sheet

HM Treasury has made recommendations that could lead to up to 500m of charitable assets being recorded on government balance sheets.

The final report of a Treasury review group, published earlier this month, says NHS charities in England that have an NHS trust as their corporate trustee should have their assets recorded on the balance sheets of those trusts.

Ministers must decide whether to implement the recommendations, which are part of a long-running debate over how NHS charities' accounts should be handled. The Charity Commission has argued that consolidation would be 'wholly inappropriate'."

Charity sector to get public confidence boost

SINGAPORE: Simpler and more transparent - that is what a new Charities Accounting Standard is hoping to help charities achieve when they file their financial reports.

It's part of efforts to improve governance and raise public confidence in the charity sector.

Currently, there is no specific financial reporting framework for charities.

Some charities rely on standards which are widely used by commercial entities, such as the Financial Reporting Standards.

These may not always be suitable, according to some charities.

From next month, they can use a simpler system put in place by the Accounting Standards Council and the Office of the Commissioner of Charities."

Challenging the ivory tower dress code: "owever, the curtain didn't go down. The scenario of naming academic buildings after companies has already been widely observed at major universities, or even middle schools in small cities on the mainland.

Another round of discussions was heated and spread to Hong Kong, where such donation-and-naming tradition had existed for a long time.

What took place on that unforgettable day of May 23 was one of those watershed events, capable of generating currents of energized outrage buzzing through the venerable hallways of the venerable Tsinghua University. Alumni were thrown into a tizzy. Some students responded to the effrontery with acts of minor vandalism."

Whatever happened to the Sisterhood? - Features - The Bigger Picture - Charity Insight: "Well, after sitting through four presentations covering topics from female charitable giving trends to the dearth of women's organisations currently operating in the UK, I came away feeling a little naive. It seems that women are still not the financial or social equals of men, much to my surprise. And, on the topic of philanthropy, the message was similarly clear: although women have good intentions and undeniable impact when it comes to charitable investment, it is still a largely male dominated field. These are inconsistencies that Vivienne Hayes and her fellow speakers are working hard to rectify; but they can't do it alone."

This is clearly a restricted group and the question will be whether such charities provide adequate public benefit.

4 Globally Oriented Tips on Using Social Media - WorldWise - The Chronicle of Higher Education: "4 Globally Oriented Tips on Using Social Media

June 9, 2011, 11:28 am

By David Wheeler

Over the past year, I’ve given talks or moderated sessions on social media in a strange set of cities: Adelaide, Sydney, and Doha. Preparation for those events was often done in the margins of my professional life: In my favorite airplane seat (aisle, exit row), on my laptop at home as I tried to multitask with family time (bad idea), or early in the morning. I’ve scanned more “Ten Tips for Twitter” than I care to think about, read my Chronicle colleagues’ excellent stories, and talked to communications and marketing administrators at universities, including many outside of the United States. Now I’d like to take revenge on all those other tip writers with my own, globally oriented version of four social media do’s and don’ts. Think of these as collected wisdom, not advice."
