Last year, directly or indirectly, he raised £110 million for his principal charities centred on The Prince’s Trust, now the largest organisation of its kind in the world, which has helped more than half a million young people since its creation 30 years ago.

Even beyond the charities the Prince of Wales is a leading brand. He now employs 105 staff on his official business, and a further 21 for the domestic comfort of himself and his wife and sons, including gardeners, secretaries, grooms, valets and a chef."

23 June 2006

We are proud to announce that the World Volunteer Web has won this year’s Web4Dev Award for excellence in website design and development. The Web4Dev Award for 2006 is sponsored by the World Bank and was presented on 21 June at a ceremony in Washington D.C.

The objective of the Award is to recognize excellence in Web design and to share lessons learned among the development community on how to best use the Web as a tool to support development activities. The selection criteria were: content, visual design, interactivity, site layout and navigation, and compatibility of technology and accessibility.

Web4Dev, short for Web for Development, is a network of 88 UN, private and non-governmental organizations making use of the Web for development-related work. At the last Web4Dev conference in May 2005, the World Bank offered to sponsor the 2006 Web4Dev Award to recognize examples of exemplary work within the Web4Dev community. Some 26 organizations of the Web4Dev community participated in the competition, from which a panel of seven judges selected three winners and two honourable mentions.

The other two winners are the websites of ReliefWeb and the International Atomic Energy Agency. The World Health Organization and the ADB Institute websites received honourable mentions."

(06-25) 04:00 PDT Beijing -- In the United States it might seem odd for the government to crack down on Habitat for Humanity or Goodwill, yet here authorities have been conducting intrusive audits of China's fledgling nongovernmental organizations.

NGOs -- mostly nonprofit organizations involved in a wide range of social, medical and environmental work -- have only recently been allowed to operate in China, and some have been focusing attention on the country's human rights and environmental policies.

Critics say the audits are meant to intimidate and disrupt the groups, particularly those receiving money and support from foreign sources."

There is a growing interest in the role of remittances in the Ghanaian economy. This interest has been heightened by the recent increase in the flow of remittances to Ghana. Remittances to Ghana amounted to over $4.5 billion in 2005, making it the largest foreign exchange earner. About 30 percent of this amount ($1.5 billion) came from individuals while the remaining amount came from religious and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs.) "

Private schools fear campaign threat to their charity status - Britain - Times Online: "Private schools fear campaign threat to their charity status
By Alexandra Frean, Social Affairs Correspondent
THE charitable status of private schools and hospitals will be challenged by a powerful campaign led by MPs, charities and lawyers, and backed by the Charity Commission, when the Charities Bill returns to Parliament next week.

The Bill replaces the 400-year-old common law definition of charity and removes the presumption of charitable status from independent schools. Instead, it requires all charities that charge high fees to demonstrate that they are of “public benefit” if they are to retain tax breaks worth a total of £88 million a year."

American billionaire Warren Buffett’s $NZ61.6 billion donation to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is testament to the absolute value of philanthropy.

“This level of donation is far beyond New Zealand giving practices but it does reinforce the idea that gifting to our community can and does make a difference to people’s lives,” says Philanthropy New Zealand Executive Director Robyn Scott.

“Warren Buffett’s generosity is truly awe inspiring and his donation will go a long way to addressing some of the world’s inequities, but you do not have to be a billionaire and give away billions to make valuable philanthropic contributions,” she says.

Philanthropy New Zealand members collectively give away in excess of $260 million annually. “Some of our members are large foundations, others are individuals or families, and they all give to numerous organisations in a variety of ways."

Businessmen are supposed to be tough creatures who are mostly concerned about profits, stock market, interest rates, foreign exchange rates, and anything else related to raising their or the company’s net worth.

So, when they venture beyond their familiar turf and delve into the country’s social problems, one can’t help but wonder.

The members of the League of Corporate Foundations apparently is not one of those businessmen and rather seems to care more on creating a more sustainable environment for our countrymen and thus, contribute in nation building.

“We can’t just do business alone,” says Marilou Erni, executive director Petron Foundation and LCF advisory council member, “There has got to be a balance of economics, social, and environment factors… It’s really going beyond the business…”

More than extending philanthropic acts, or dole-outs (as the more affluent in the society are wont to do), LCF is providing a rather businesslike approach to social problems—meaning more concrete solutions that would result to long term success."

Lord Richard Best, director of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and chair of the Giving Forum, said: “We floated the idea with the Home Office about five months ago. An ecological gift is a donation of land or an interest in land - such as a conservation easement, covenant or servitude - that has been certified as 'ecologically sensitive' according to specific national and provincial criteria, to an approved environmental charity or any level of government. Ecologically sensitive lands are areas or sites that currently, or could in the future, significantly contribute to the conservation of Canada's biodiversity and environmental heritage. In exchange for their gift, donors of certified ecologically sensitive lands enjoy special income tax provisions specific to their gift. Ecological gifts receive tax treatment that is different from most other charitable gifts. Some benefits that they may receive are reduced taxable capital gain on the disposition of the property; no income limit for calculating the tax credit/deduction; donation value certified by the Government of Canada; and a tax liability for donees that do not protect the gifted land.

International NGOs play an increasingly influential role. Global public opinion surveys show higher trust in NGOs than in government and business. This initiative comes at a time when the non-profit sector is coming under closer scrutiny, both from those who want it to flourish and those who seek to curtail NGO activities."
